That week of culture shock, ups-and-downs, craziness and tears

I'd like to mention here that I am currently experiencing a serious case of food poisoning and hating the fact that my body feels like it's just been through a stampede. Every muscle is aching. T.T Why oh whyyy?! My back is like fucking sore nao and I have no idea why. Can't be from vomiting right? So weird.

Edited : Okay just got back home from the clinic. The doctor says that my joints and back are aching due to the food poisoning. Something about the poison travelling to main parts of my body? Yergh. I also have a fever and low blood pressure so I should be drinking like 3 times more water than I normally should. Sigh. I lost 3 freakin' kgs because of this! And fasting month is just around the corner argh. Need to gain the weight back! Worst time to fall sick but, sigh whatever. I guess I'll just rest for the night. Hopefully the meds will work by tomorrow and I'll be strong enough to continue my work. @_@

There's gonna be a lot of babbling so scroll to the bottom to read a re-cap haha.

Anyway, I think many of my friends know that I had recently attended an architectural workshop in UPM called PADI. To be perfectly honest, the whole camp was a bit of a shock to me. The first day was the absolute worst for most of us (LOL). We got to UPM, with pretty much no sleep for over 24 hours, and at first, we were sent to our hostel and our reaction was ... *insert horrid kill-me-nao face right here*. Oh God, how could anyone live in such conditions? The room was dusty, the mattress was about 7cm thick, the toilets looked like they belonged in a horror movie ... should I go on? (Note, this was our first impressions of the place).

Here's a hilarious photo of my junior in her dorm room (photo taken off Facebook). My room is almost exactly the same, except it's mirrored and there's no mattress on the top bunk of the double decker bed. You can already imagine the dust in the room from looking at the photo above so I shan't go into detail about that.

After dropping off our luggage, we headed to the architecture faculty in which briefing and installations took place. During the briefing that I had to attend, we apparently had to come up with "cheers". WTF? Cheers? Is this high school? Felt like LEO Forums all over again. I was like "huh?!" throughout the whole briefing. This still ain't so bad. It gets worst at the end of the day. So anyway, may I remind you that my group for installation had not slept a wink for about 36 hours by then. You can imagine the anger that was stirred up when (they-who-shall-not-be-named) started  their abrupt and ear numbing cheering during installation. Gawd were we cranky. Even our facilitators could sense our negative aura. (Once again, we were lacking sleep and all so tolerance level was at its lowest haha).

Here's a badly taken panoramic photo taken by a phone app in my phone. It kinda gives you the idea of how crowded it was in the gallery and why we were so easily aggravated by anything that could breathe.

Which reminds me, I want to take this opportunity to mention my facilitator. Haha! We had two baby sitters, Bibiana and Ping. However, we became really good friends with Ping, seeing as he was always so concerned about us (maybe not on the first day because we were just plain bitchyy, due to sleep deprivation and just plain culture shock lol). He's such a sweet person. Will get back to that later.

Anyway, after we finished our installation, we apparently had to join some PADI activities but we refused and headed back to the hostel to shower and rest. You'd think that we would just head back to sleep but no. We felt bad for being bitchy so we stayed up and went for dinner. Hitting the 48 hour mark bro. The longest I have ever gone with no sleep + so much of my energy being used. Unbelievable. At night, each university had to share their cheers and us being Taylor's, well, we didn't have a proper one. HAHA! We just made noise and screamed at each other in a circle, potentially embarrassing ourselves. But who gives a shit? Lol.

Here are some photos of our glorious installation!

Work displayed - Renderings by Yu Xuan and Ik Chia!

Work displayed - Origami Bench by Yvo, Tuck and Clarisse :)

Awesome section model by ... seniors of whom I don't know of and Eu Jin's panels being displayed at the side/functioning as a partition as well! :D

One of the popular displays, the balsa wood model of Florence Cathedral by Teck Hong, Jojo etc and rendering by Yi Rui and Ik Chia!

Gorgeous sketches by Azie!

It would be so much better if the the background was not of gypsum board and fluorescent lighting but instead, blue skies. Sigh. But yeah, this is the canopy that we managed to construct; Hoong's sketches being displayed on one of the spinning wheels! :D

The other popular balsa wood model of the Notredame by our juniors.

I admit that we were a pretty bitchy group to handle. Ping said that his first impression of us was that we were a group of lansi, rich kids. I'm not surprised. We're too spoilt by Taylor's and our parents; I mean, during the first few days of camp, everything was just ... yucks. I couldn't stand the fact that the communal toilet had no toilet bowls, no tissue, had no proper lights, no hot water wtf! 6 whole days of cold water dear GOD. I couldn't stand the fact that there were no blankets in my bed room nor were there proper wardrobes. But as the days passed by, these problems shrunk. Haha. I guess it was a matter of getting use to. We eventually calmed the fuck down and everything seemed okay at the end.

Anyway, the next day, we had to prepare for our performance. We probably had the shortest performance out of all performances! But we got a few compliments for our short and sweet acoustic thinggy. We also sang a birthday song to Ping. Hahaha. It was a way of apologizing for being little brats and we felt bad that he had to take care of us during his birthday. :) It was last minute but it was still good. So proud! :'D

Here's Benson being musical on his trusty guitar.

Here are the main vocalists looking confused. But it was part of the performance, I swear.

Here's me, shamelessly standing on a dustbin, barefooted, singing Happy Birthday to Ping, the adorable guy wearing a cap, standing on the left side of me in the photo.

Here's a video of our performance. I couldn't stop laughing while watching cause I feel so embarrassed watching myself do the stupidest things. Sigh.

So the next day, we attended Bual PADI; talks by 3 architects. Ar. Tan Loke Mun, Ar. Wooi Lok Kuang and one of my ultimate favourite architects ever existed, Kevin Mark Low. It was a great start to the day, seriously! These 3 architects had such different perspectives towards architecture, it's pretty amazing. Ar. Tan had such a strong vision of how sustainability should be in the future, whereas Ar. Wooi focused more on how poetics should play a large role in a building. Kevin Mark Low, however, blew my mind awayyy! He explained "form follows function" so goddamn well. If only we had him as a lecturer this semester, I tell you, I wouldn't be struggling so much with Studio. I feel that because of him, I do have hope of being an architect. Haha! Truth be told, I have lost all my confidence this semester. I keep thinking that I just don't have the talent for design. I can talk and I can present myself well, which makes me feel like I should just be a lecturer. But after listening to KML, just made me feel inspired. Makes me want to try harder, and so I shall in sem 6! :) And BY THE WAY, KML spoke to me ~ *swoons* Crossing this off my bucket list *fan girl moment*.

Here's a photo of us Taylor's students. The only third years in the camp (along side UCSI actually). I bet you, we were the only ones who understood the talk.

Ar. Tan Loke Mun.

KML #Likeasir

Okay enough about that, the rest of the day continued on normally. We didn't do much since we were observers so we mostly rested and napped like fat children. The second performance night was okay. KLIUC's rendition of Bukit Kepong was rad to da core man! Friggin' awesome acting and composition!

On Wednesday, we all headed to Putrajaya for some activities. But well ... we didn't do much cause being observers, we were just there to observe. So whart did we do? Go to Alamanda to watch Brave, eat Nandos, play at the arcade and bowl ... LOL! Funny larh. But we seriously had nothing better to do. We had more fun at night but I'mma keep that to myself haha.

Here is a photo of me, ready to fulfill a punishment that was forced upon me (due to a stupid game invented by JO-SEPH-LING *glares*) I'll leave the rest to your imagination.

Thursday was normal too. Nothing much during the day. Me and Yvo had an impromptu presentation for the installation. Thought it went pretty well. The judges complimented us and said Taylor's is one of the best private schools in Malaysia. GASP! So touched. Haha. After that, I had to attend a Liason meeting in which I fell asleep listening to lecturers state out the activities their students took place in throughout 2011 and 2012. Boringgg. @_@ Even my dean was bored, I'm sure. An okay experience though.

That night was the closing ceremony though! The most gan cheong moment of the week because we'd find out who won whart competitions! We participated in almost all competitions! Photography; captured moment, design part I, multimedia, performance and installation exhibition booth. We didn't win photography, design nor performance (though I truly believe that we were awesome in all of these competitions :P) but we did win for multimedia and installation! WOO!

This was the "Parasitic Architecture" design entry by Michael, Chong Shien and Michele.

This was the "Captured Moment" photography entry by Dexter.
I honestly thought whart my group mates submitted had a great fighting chance of winning. Awesome right their entries! Good job. :)

Congratz to Nesh, Moe, Edward (and I think, Daecan?) for winning third place in the multimedia category! Honestly, I was so damn shocked! Ping made it seem like there was no hope for us to win, since the video was so short and simple and every other school had like a mini HD short film as a submission. LOL! But I'm so happy and proud that Nesh's and the others' creativity actually got recognition! You guys did great and I love your video! :D Good job guys!

Here's their awesome video! :) I seriously love it.

And congratz to my group of AWESOME INSTALLATION PEOPLE! WE WON SECOND PLACE. WE ACTUALLY WON. We have broken the glass wall once again! I'm still so happy and proud of us. :D Second time joining a competition and we managed to win a prize again. Truly blessed. I was so happy when they announced our university. I mean, look at my face!

Photo taken from this website!

The last day of PADI was bittersweet. I didn't know whether I was happy to leave or sad that the camp was over. It didn't start off as I expected but it ended up being pretty great. Made a new friend, learned to adapt to new things, won competitions ... sigh. Nao, back to reality. And reality didn't start off very well, seeing as I'm still weak from the food poisoning. Totally messed up my schedule for work! But I'll try to manage :S

Here's a re-cap of the week.

The horrible stuff :
1) Lack of sleep. Didn't sleep much before and during PADI itself.
2) The cheering and screaming and noise and vuvuzelas oh Gawd.
3) The food.
4) The heat.
5) The dorm toilet.

The great stuff :
1) Meeting and making new friends.
2) Being taken care of by Ping and Mr. Kid (because we're so spoilt haha).
3) Performing something pretty memorable.
4) Having three renowned architects answer my questions :D KML literally talked to me! *swoons*
5) Some fun nights with my circle of people. :)
6) Winning the competition and tearing up like a fat baby because I was just too happy.
7) Major laughing.
8) Honestly, making really great memories. My last year of degree is becoming one big epic story man. :)

So thank you. Thank you to my lecturer for brain washing us into joining this camp, for guiding us through this whole thing and for always feeding us when we truly needed the energy (LOL FOR REAL). Thank you to my university for providing us the resources that we needed. Thank you to my friends and classmates who stuck by me, even when I mengamuk and stress out for no reason. Thank you for always cooperating and for being the creative people that you are. Thank you to our newest friend, who took care of us while we were in our little version of a hell hole (which wasn't so bad at the end of the week haha). Thank you to everyone for everything. Truly blessed for this experience.
